SALAMI, Olubukola Oyenike (Mrs.) – PERMANENT SECRETARY

Mrs. Olubukola Oyenike Salami, born 16th October, 1964 was appointed as a State Counsel in the Lagos State Ministry of Justice on 7th October 1994. She has served in various capacities within the Ministry of Justice and other Agencies of Government. 

Mrs. Salami was the Director at ‘Office of the Public Defender’ (OPD), Lagos State Ministry of Justice from the Period of 4th July 2016 till March 2018. Whist working at Citizens Mediation Centre and as the Director OPD, her work experience exposed her to matters relating to children, women and the vulnerable generally. This work experience has tremendously horned her skills on issues concerning this group of people in our society and she has passionately carried out her official responsibilities, both in advocacy and litigation for the rights of the various classes of this group of people to the very best of her ability. She also facilitated the release of about 300 children from various correctional centres in Lagos State.

With the support of an erstwhile Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State whilst she was a Director at OPD, she invited Faculty Members from the esteemed National Institute of Advocacy Training Colorado, United States of America, to Nigeria, to organize training on Advocacy Skills which held for the first time in Sub-Saharan Africa in November 2016 and November 2017. Mrs. Salami’s services in other departments of the Ministry of Justice where she worked has also greatly impacted her efficiency as counsel. Mrs. Olubukola Salami has been privileged to organize and attend many trainings both local and foreign. Some of the local trainings include courses on Provision of Legal Aid for Children in Conflict with the law in Lagos State, which she organised in collaboration with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and a course on Domestic violence, organised by the National Women Development Center, Abuja. She was also a member of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Lagos State.

Mrs. Salami is a strategic advisor, fearless advocate and has featured as speaker at many seminars on various topics relating to alternative dispute resolution, gender issues, domestic violence, sexual abuse and Child Abuse. At these different fora, she delivered well received papers that were applauded.

Mrs. Salami was appointed as the Executive Secretary (E.S), Lagos State Judicial Service Commission (L.S.J.S.C) in April 2018. As the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Judicial Service Commission, Mrs. Salami has worked with the Chief Judge Emeritus, HonourableJustice Opeyemi Oke and currently works with the Honourable Chief Judge of Lagos State, HonourableJustice Kazeem Alogba, to bring about various reforms and innovation in line with the Law. As E.S., L.S.J.S.C., Mrs. Salami, in 2019, along with other members of Lagos State Judicial Service Commission, attended a training programme, in Washington, DC, USA, on “Overview of the Justice System of the United States of America”; an impactful programmemeant to enhance the understanding of Judicial Service Commission members about the best global practices in Administration of Justice System. As the Executive Secretary of Lagos State Judicial Service Commission, she has facilitated trainings for members of Customary Courts in Lagos state to enhance their knowledge in the dispensation of justice as well as visited various Local Governments in all the IBILE Divisions in Lagos State Lagos to sensitize them on the importance of Customary Courts. 

Due to her desire for a better service delivery in the area of Justice and improvement of Customary Courts in Lagos State, she proposed the amendment of Customary Court Laws of Lagos State which is still under review.

As a result of her dedication and commitment to the growth of the work of the Judicial Service Commission in the administration and delivery of Justice in the state, Mrs. Olubukola Oyenike Salami was appointed by His Excellency, Governor Babajide Sanwoolu as a Permanent Secretary in the Public Service of Lagos State on 14th September 2021 and she has been serving as the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Judicial Service Commission.   

Mrs. Olubukola Salami holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science, University of Lagos (1986), Bachelor of Laws degree, Lagos State University (1990) and a Master’s degree in Law, University of Ibadan (2008). She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1991 as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. She is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and also a member of the International Bar Association (IBA). Mrs. Salami is a registered member of the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR), United Kingdom. She is also an Associate Member of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC).

She is happily married with children. Her hobbies are: traveling, reading and she also has a passion for women and children.
